MVP Award goes to Kick Out Zwarte Piet

On the 20th of November, Alert Fund for Youth handed out the MVP (Most Valued Project) Award to Kick Out Zwarte Piet. Kick Out Zwarte Piet is the coalition of the three organisations Nederland Wordt Beter, Stop Blackface and Zwarte Piet Niet, and fights against institutional racism. The coalition strives for the Dutch national Sinterklaas feast to be without exclusion and for ‘Piet’ not to present a stereotypical image of colonial submission.

Recently pro-Blackface-demonstrators stopped the coalition from peacefully protesting at the national celebration of Sinterklaas’ arrival by obstructing their busses on the highway, which flared the debate about racism in The Netherlands.

By handing out the MVP Award to Kick Out Zwarte Piet, Alert Fund wants to show her appreciation for the coalition’s activism and create a stimulant for her activities. The award was presented at the end of a discussion evening themed ‘How do I survive the Blackface discussion?’ during which different ways in which people campaign against Blackface were examined. Kick Out Zwarte Piet plans to use the prize money of 1000 euros for their demonstrations.
